About

CUE Labs is the company behind the CUE open source project.

We turn configuration from a source of risk into a source of reliability. We enable organizations to understand, audit, and validate all data, from build-time configurations to runtime payloads, to prevent outages and ensure compliance.

Founded by CUE creator Marcel van Lohuizen (co-creator of Google's Borg) and Paul Jolly, we are a team of programming language experts passionate about making system reliable and safe.

Mission

Our mission is built upon the foundation of the CUE open source project. We lead its development and stewardship, ensuring its continued growth and health. In parallel, we build the enterprise-grade tools and services needed to operationalize CUE's power within complex organizations.

This open-core model creates a virtuous cycle: strengthening the open source foundation while delivering the Configuration Control Plane that enterprises need to achieve provable compliance, reduce operational risk, and accelerate innovation. We help you finally answer, "What is the full impact of this change?"

Team

Marcel van Lohuizen

Co-Founder & CEO
Marcel is the original creator of CUE and CEO and co-founder of CUE Labs. Before CUE Labs, Marcel spent nearly 20 years at Google, where he co-created Borg (the precursor of Kubernetes), led the development of GCL, contributed to Go, and studied system outages. His experience with large-scale configurations now drives CUE Labs’s mission: to simplify complex configuration and make infrastructure reliable, maintainable and scalable.

Paul Jolly

Co-Founder
Before co-founding CUE Labs, Paul was a Vice President at Goldman Sachs working in the Securities Division. He then co-founded a financial modeling start-up using constraints to establish a source of truth for financial data, and co-created Play with Go, an interactive learning platform. With a strong background in backend systems and developer tooling, Paul makes powerful tools more accessible and reliable.

Roger Peppe

Engineeer
Roger discovered CUE while working on backend services at Heetch and InfluxData. An early contributor to Go and its ecosystem, he brings broad experience across software development with a focus on simplicity and the right abstractions. Having seen firsthand the superpowers CUE provides, he’s thrilled to help realize more of its potential at CUE Labs.

Daniel Marti

Engineeer
Before joining CUE Labs, Daniel worked at Protocol Labs and other startups building products around open source technologies. A Go contributor for over a decade, he has gained significant experience in open source ecosystems, from growing side projects on GitHub to running meet-ups and workshops aimed at encouraging collaboration. At CUE Labs, he builds products and supports the growth of both the project and the community around it.

Dominik Mayer

Chief of Staff
Dominik has a background in business and finance and leads operations at CUE Labs. Before joining CUE Labs, he was a Principal at a healthcare venture capital firm investing in early stage startups in the US and Europe. Previously, he worked at a market intelligence startup in San Francisco and in investment firms. He’s excited about CUE Labs’ mission to shape a foundational, but long-neglected industry.

Matthew Sackman

Engineer
Matthew has had a varied and diverse career as a software engineer. He was a founding engineer on RabbitMQ, has built distributed databases (GoshawkDB), worked in biotech and environmental-tech, and has had several consultancy roles. Most at home between programming language theory and back-end systems architecture, he sometimes dips into front-end work, building social audio conferencing apps, and musical metronomes.
